The First Workshop on Pelagic Habitats (HELCOM PELAGIC WS 1-2021) will be held online on 8-9 June 2021. This Meeting will be an online Joint Scoping Event between the nominated experts and the HELCOM BLUES Project (Activity 2).
This Workshop will discuss the following topics:
1) Identify, collate and summarize existing pelagic habitat information from the Baltic Sea region with relevance for status assessment, especially for HOLAS III.
2) Suggest how existing information can be utilized in the HOLAS III report (e.g. review the topic specific work plan generated in the Second HELCOM Indicator Workshop (Pelagic Habitats work plan) and any relevant regional projects addressing the topic
3) Review the updated HELCOM indicators ‘zooplankton mean size and total stock (MSTS)’ and ‘seasonal succession of dominating phytoplankton groups’ and how to use them to assess pelagic habitats
4) Based on experiences from points 1-3, propose viable and best options for longer term development towards an optimal assessment of pelagic habitats in the Baltic Sea post HOLAS III (taking into account available knowledge, data and other relevant factors).
