Three questions to… ICES, Activity 4 (underwater noise) and Activity 5 (data for VMS and fishing intensity)

Colin, Carlos, Lise and Neil specialize in data governance and project management related to the provision and uptake of quality assured data services in end-user products delivered to a range of clients and infrastructure projects including HELCOM, OSPAR, the European Commission, Regional Fisheries bodies, as well as nation states bordering the NorthEast Atlantic. Lara supports and coordinates the delivery of ecosystem and environment advice to these clients.

Activity 4, underwater Noise (impulsive noise)

What is your Activity/Task in HELCOM BLUES all about? What main challenges and/or pressures on the Baltic Sea does it try to solve?

ICES already hosts the underwater impulsive noise portal for HELCOM, these outputs are used to provide indicators of noise pressure (Pulse Block Days) that were used in HOLAS2 and will be part of HOLAS3.

What are the planned outcomes of your specific BLUES Activity/Task?

We will make improvements to the visualization of these data, and refine the reporting of these data to improve the data outputs that are used in the indicators.

How will your BLUES Activity/Task benefit your organization in particular and the Baltic Sea in general?

The impulsive noise registry is also used by OSPAR in the Northeast Atlantic, and they will therefore benefit from these upgrades. For ICES, we are keen to align activities over the regional seas, and this work will be used to align further in the ICES convention area, but also with other European projects.

Activity 5, VMS/ Fishing Intensity

What is your Activity/Task in HELCOM BLUES all about? What main challenges and/or pressures on the Baltic Sea does it try to solve?

Our task is to pull together a comprehensive dataset that describes fishing intensity and its footprint in the Baltic Sea. Primarily, these data will be used to assess the impact of fishing activity on the seabed.

What are the planned outcomes of your specific BLUES Activity/Task?

We have published a state of the art data product that is publicly available, and will be used in HOLAS3.

How will your BLUES Activity/Task benefit your organization in particular and the Baltic Sea in general?

The task has proven useful in honing our production process, and quality control of these data; this product has pushed the boundary of previous products in its scope.
